VIRTUAL CONSULTATIONS
MediRx provides its patients virtual consultations for minor ailments which enables patients to receive timely and efficient care. Our pharmacists can assess and prescribe for our patients for a host of conditions.
What is needed for a virtual consultation:
- Devices such as a smartphone, tablet or computer with audio and video or a telephone.
- A private area in which the consultation can be conducted.
- An Ontario Health Insurance (OHIP) card and other drug insurance.

Is there any cost for minor ailments assessments and prescribing?
- This program is funded by the Ministry of Health. Therefore, any patient with an Ontario Health Insurance (OHIP) card can access this service free of charge.
- If a prescription is issued to treat the minor ailment there may be costs associated with dispensing it, similar to prescriptions provided by a physician or nurse practitioner.
What would happen in the event that a prescription medication is prescribed:
- Based on the consultation, a medication may be prescribed by the pharmacist to treat the minor ailment. As our goal at MediRx is to optimize patient care, we can deliver the medication to your home. However, patients do have an option to fill the prescription elsewhere.
How can I book an appointment?
- Patients can call the pharmacy to book an appointment to speak with the pharmacist. Our pharmacists will ensure that a consultation is booked immediately.
Minor ailments are described as health conditions that can be managed with minimal treatment and/or self- care strategies. Below is a list of minor ailments a pharmacist can assess and prescribe for. Please tap on each icon to find out more about the ailment.
Urinary Tract Infection
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are very common, especially among women. Bacteria causes the lining of the bladder and urethra to become red and irritated.
Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is more commonly known as pink eye and results in irritation and inflammation of the eye. Conjunctivitis can be caused by allergies, viruses or bacteria.
Herpes Labialis
Herpes Labialis is more commonly known as cold sores. Cold sores are caused by viruses that can lead to painful, unsightly sores on your lip and around your nose.
Vulvovaginal candidiasis
Vulvovaginal candidiasis is more commonly known as yeast infections. Vaginal yeast infections are common and bothersome. Typical symptoms include itching, irritation and burning in the vaginal area.
Allergic rhinitis
Allergic rhinitis refers to nasal allergies or hay fever. Sneezing, itchy eyes, runny and itchy nose, and congestion can all occur.
Candidal stomatitis
Candidal stomatitis is more commonly known as oral thrush. Oral thrush is an infection in the mouth caused by yeast called candida. Symptoms of oral thrush include thick, white coating on the tongue, the inside of the cheeks and lips or the gums.
Dermatitis
(Atopic, eczema, allergic and contact)

Dysmenorrhea
Dysmenorrhea is more commonly known as painful menstruation. There are pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic strategies that can help manage this condition.
Heartburn
Gastroesophogeal reflux disease (GERD) is more commonly known as heartburn. Heartburn and indigestion can result in abdominal pain, which can result in long term harm if prolonged and unmanaged.
Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are the result of swollen and irritated veins resulting in discomfort and irritation.
Impetigo
Impetigo is a contagious, bacterial skin infection that occurs mostly in infants and children. Impetigo usually begins with red, itchy sores most often on the face.
Insect bites and urticarial (hives)
Insect bites can cause itchy bumps on the skin, known as hives, that can be very uncomfortable.
Tick bites
Post exposure prophylaxis to prevent Lyme disease.

Musculoskeletal sprains & strains
Sprains result from a stretch or tear of a ligament that connects one bone to another. Strains occur because of pulling or tearing of muscle fibres.
Acne
Acne is a condition that usually begins at puberty when the skin becomes oily. If acne is not managed, it may lead to severe acne, which can then result in scarring.
Aphthous Ulcers
Aphthous ulcers are more commonly known as canker sores. Canker sores occur inside the cheeks or lips, on the side of the tongue, on the soft palate or on the floor of the mouth and last about 7-10 days.
Pinworms
Pinworms, also known as threadworms, are parasites that can cause itching in the anal area. Pinworm infestation is common in children between the ages of 5-14 years.
Diaper Dermatitis
Irritant diaper rashes, caused by infrequent diaper changes or harsh detergents, generally do not affect skin folds. Those caused by yeast infections can affect skin folds.
Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy
Nausea and vomiting or "morning sickness" occurs in about 60-80% of pregnancies. It occurs much more often in early pregnancy and usually resolves by the 20th week.
